Coin collecting is a very popular hobby among many, and involves collecting legally minted currency from all over the globe. The most sought out coins are those that were only in circulation for a short period of time, and are usually minted with especially beautiful or historical pictures. A US silver coin is a great addition to any coin collection, and is one of the most treasured varieties of coins in the world.

The US silver coin is most widely known for the underlying message issued on many of them, ranging from stern warnings to messages of hope and everlasting peace. The face of our beloved 'liberty' is also commonly seen on the us silver coin, usually with an olive branch and a protective shield. The American eagle is also popular among silver pieces, usually holding the olive branch for peace and a set of arrows representing war.

Each coin has a silver net content of 0.77344 ounce, with a bag weighing at least 50 ounces more than a bag of silver quarters, dimes, or half dollars.

Gold and Silver Maple Leafs Get New Packaging

Gold Maple Leafs and Maple Leafs silver dollars are receiving packaging makeovers, changes clearly mandated by investor disfavor with packaging that the Royal Canadian Mint has used since the coins were introduced. Gold Maple Leafs debuted in 1979, Silver Maple Leafs in 1988. The changes appear to be good moves, which should increase sales of Silver Maple Leafs and help keep Gold Maple Leafs the preferred pure (.9999 fine) gold bullion coins.

Since inception, 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs have been packaged ten to a tube. Because Maple Leafs are 24-karat, pure gold, they are �soft,� relative to alloyed gold coins, such as American Gold Eagles and Krugerrands. Further, because of the design of the coins and the tight-fitting tubes, it is difficult to remove, inspect, and reinsert 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs in their tubes without scratching the coins.

Actually, reinserting Gold Maple Leafs without at least some scratching is nearly impossible. Further, if the persons inspecting the coins do not know how easily the Gold Maple Leafs are damaged, needless damage often occurs while the coins are out their tubes.

Gold Maple Leafs carry the image of Queen Elizabeth II on the front, with a flat, clear field alongside the image. The backs have the outline of a maple leaf, hence the coins� names. The problem arises from the coins� really sharp milled (reeded) edges. When the coins are reinserted in their tubes, the milled edges often scratch the fields.

Then there is the problem with investors who like to �heft� their coins �to get a feel of them.� If they put four or five Gold Maple Leafs in the palms of their hands and �clang� them, the damage can be quite severe. Should a Gold Maple Leaf be dropped, rim damage is almost guaranteed.

As Gold Maple Leafs have been sold into the secondary market, damaged coins have become such a problem that Gold Maple Leafs have lost popularity with investors. The problem has become so widespread that many wholesalers bid only �melt� for Gold Maple Leafs, regardless of their condition. By paying only �melt,� wholesalers can profitably resell the coins for industrial or jewelry purposes if no buyers are found for the coins.

Gold Maple Leafs, like the Gold Eagles and the Krugerrands, are bullion coins, which trade for the value of their gold content, plus small premiums. Damaged Gold Maple Leafs do not mean a loss of gold; they contain an ounce of gold regardless of the scratching or rim nicks. Still, buyers do not like to receive damaged coins. This means that Gold Maple Leafs sold into the secondary market have to be evaluated for the degree of damage.

Some wholesalers refuse to take the time to individually inspect Gold Maple Leafs and separate them according to their condition. These are the wholesalers who generally will pay only �melt� for 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs, regardless of condition. Fortunately, the free market being what it is, there are still some wholesalers who will buy according to condition.

Yet the handwriting is on the wall: 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs in tubes will continue to lose popularity and probably will join Krugerrands, Mexican 50 Pesos, and Austrian 100 Coronas as basic bullion coins, which carry the smallest premiums in the bullion coin market. Still, the packaging makeover should fillip sales of new Gold Maple Leafs.

With the new packaging, each 1-oz Gold Maple Leaf will be encapsulated in plastic and suspended in the middle of a plastic card, somewhat as 1-oz gold bars are packaged. However, the plastic protecting the Gold Maple Leafs will be heavier and more durable than the plastic used with 1-oz gold bars. The new packaging should keep the coins from being easily damaged.

With the new packaging, the Royal Canadian Mint made another big change: 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs will now come 25 to a box, whereas the old packaging is ten to a tube. This change could further increase sales as 20 coins are common ordering units for gold bullion coins, because the world�s most popular gold bullion coins�American Gold Eagles�come 20 to a tube. As a result of the change, investors wanting �complete original packaging� will move up to 25 ounces.

However, orders for small quantities mean the coins will have to be removed from their mint boxes�but still individually encapsulated�and put in other containers. The new packaging also will require more storage space for Gold Maple Leafs than for 1-oz gold coins that come in tubes.

Although 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs will be a little more cumbersome to handle, a large segment of the gold coin bullion market prefers pure gold coins. Gold Maple Leafs have long been the most popular 1-oz pure (.9999 fine or 24-karat) gold bullion coins on the market, and the new packaging should keep Gold Maple Leafs as the preferred 24-karat gold bullion coins. (The market for pure gold bullion coins is estimated to $2.4 billion annually.) The new packaging is expected to debut sometime in August.

New packaging for 1-oz Silver Maple Leafs has already been introduced. However, Silver Maple Leafs in their old packaging are still available. Since Silver Maple Leafs were introduced in 1988, they have been packaged twenty coins to a sheet, 200 coins in a box. Each coin was individually enclosed in plastic. The new packaging will be similar to the U.S. Mint�s Silver Eagles packaging.

Silver Maple Leafs will now come 20 to a tube, 25 tubes to a container, and 500 coins to a �mint box.� The new box will be made of durable heavy plastic, whereas the boxes of 200 are cardboard. The new packaging should make Silver Maple Leafs more competitive with American Silver Eagles, presently the most popular 1-oz modern silver bullion coins being sold.

One of the best ways to arm yourself against the savvy coin dealer is knowing the wholesale prices he pays for his coins. A very widely-used standard in U.S. coins is the "Grey Sheet," sometimes referred to as the "CDN." This is the Coin Dealer Newsletter, which is printed on grey paper stock, and comes out weekly. Most serious coin dealers subscribe to this publication, which lists the "bid" and "ask" values for every major type of U.S. coin, plus mint sets, slabbed coins, and banknotes (called the "green sheet.") "Bid" prices are the prices that dealers are paying if another dealer brings the coins to them. "Ask" prices are the prices for coins a dealers asks to buy. For example, if I call and ask to buy 100 common date Silver Eagles, I'll be quoted the "ask," or selling price. But if I want to sell the 100 Silver Eagles, I'll be quoted the "bid" or buying price. The difference between the two prices is the profit margin. It is quite thin for most coins.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving and Printing operates a Mutilated Currency Division where workers meticulously piece together millions of dollars of U.S. banknotes that are partially destroyed in floods, fires or other calamities.

"Any currency that is mutilated, it's been damaged in some way, it's been burned, buried, we've got specialists on board who undergo a six-year training period" to put the money back together, said Len Olijar, chief financial officer at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The department receives between $50 million and $70 million worth of mutilated money every year. Of that, technicians are able to reconstruct and redeem more than $30 million.

It's usually money people have put away for safekeeping. Often, it's been sitting untouched for years. That's part of the problem: People stash their cash in all the wrong ways.

After a probable absence of over a century, perhaps the most important New Orleans gold coin in existence is coming back to its ancestral home. My friend Paul Hollis, a coin dealer from Metairie (a suburb of New Orleans), has arranged for the unique Proof 1844-O eagle to be placed on exhibit at the New Orleans mint. This coin, with an estimated value of $2.5 million, goes on public display November 1 and will also be taken around Louisiana on tour by Hollis.

The New Orleans Mint began producing coins in 1838. The very first issue struck by this mint was a group of 20 half dollars to inaugurate coinage and a small group of Proof half dollars were made in 1839 (plus at least one Dime dated 1839-O is known that has been designated a “Specimen” by NGC). So, we know that the New Orleans mint had experience with making Proof coins and that the quality of these was comparable to that seen at the Philadelphia mint.

In 1844, the New Orleans mint produced at least one example of a Proof half eagle and eagle. Remarkably, both still exist and, even more remarkably, both are superbly preserved. Why were they produced and who were they struck for?

Unfortunately, contemporary documentation does not exist that gives the definitive answer to these questions, so we have to make some assumptions. I think it’s safe to say that the Proof 1844-O gold set was struck in commemoration of either a special event or, more likely, a visit to the Mint by some special VIP or dignitary. My guess would be that they were made for personal presentation to President John Tyler.

A second big category of damage type we see on coins is fingerprints. The oils and acids present on one's hands can damage coins if left on the surface of the coin for an extended time. Initially, they can cause a fingerprint pattern toned area that is unattractive and lowers the value and grade of the coin. Left unattended, these oils and acids can eventually etch the surface of the coin making the fingerprint permanent. I personally have mixed emotions about prooflike gold coins. Due to the fact that gold is a soft metal, the surfaces tend to easily pick up marks, nicks and scratches and these tend to be strongly amplified by deep, reflective fields. Unless a Prooflike gold coin is a Gem, it tends to have a scruffy appearance and may have compromised eye appeal as a result.

Then, they look through the many price lists they might have to find a dealer who offers the same note in an acceptable condition for an acceptable price. Canadian Maple Leaf Coins are the official bullion coins of Canada made by the Royal Canadian Mint. They come in the metals of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was designed by Walter Ott and has been minted since 1979. It is made of .9999 fine gold with almost no base metals mined only in Canada. It is made in 1/20 oz worth $1C, 1/10 oz worth $5C, 1/4 oz worth $10C, 1/2 oz worth $20C, and 1 oz worth $50C. The obverse of the coin has Queen Elizabeth II and the reverse has a picture of a Canadian Maple Leaf. TheCanadian Maple Leaf silver dollar has been minted since 1988. It is made of 1 ounce of .9999 fine silver and is worth $5C. It has an average mintage of 935,680 coins per year. Among my top five worst coin investments are modified coins, such as genuine U.S. Mint products that have been altered by adding holographics or coloring. These coins are generally considered "damaged" by serious coin collectors, and you will only get the bullion value when you go to sell them, if that. I have heard of dealers discounting them because of the added impurities that the paint and other crap applied to the coins adds to the metal.
According to many experts, the best type of investment coins are rarer, key date coins issued by the United States, in the best grade you can afford to buy them in. If you can't afford to shell out $2,000 a coin to buy key dates in high grades, then buy common coins in the finest grades you can. Lower grade, common coins have historically not appreciated as much in value as key date coins do, so they are probably not a good investment choice (although they're great for filling up the holes in albums, especially with kids helping out!)

The best type of pick box for finding honest to goodness bargains is the flat-rate so-called "junk box." These are boxes into which the dealer has thrown coins that he has determined are not worth his time to catalog and price individually. Sometimes coins get thrown in there just because they're low grade. Other times, the coins might be high grade but just really common. Some dealers even throw in their "attribution challenges!" This latter type of pick box is, by far, the most profitable and most interesting for the cherrypicker! In reality though, most pick boxes contain a mixture of two or more categories of these types of coins. (Attribution challenges are coins that the dealer can't find in his coin catalogs. These are most often seen in World coins, but I've even found genuine U.S. Pre-Federal Colonial Copper coins in junk boxes marked "Misc. Tokens - $2 Each.")

American Eagle Silver Dollar Coins - The Reasoning Behind the Rationing

American Eagle silver dollars collectors are angry. And with good reason. In March, the U.S. Mint suddenly stopped taking orders for the silver bullion coins. And in late May, it imposed purchasing limits on its 13 world-wide authorized buyers.

The U.S. Mint has limited silver purchases before, in the late 1990's. Investors loaded up on the precious metal, fearing that the economy would be crippled by the computers' inability to adjust to the new millennium. The U.S. Mint has explained the rationing as a necessary decision, due to the unprecedented demand for the American Silver Eagles.

In 2008, The U.S. Mint sold 6.8 million American Eagle Silver Coins. That is twice the amount that was sold in 2007. In March alone, sales of the Silver Eagles surged to 1.85 million, nine times the amount sold in February! Clearly, the U.S. Mint has misjudged the strength of the silver bull market and the demand for the American Eagle Silver Dollar coins.

But what has caused this unprecedented demand for these silver bullion coins? Here are a few possible reasons:

The price of silver is soaring. On January 3rd, 2000, the first trading day of the new millennium, the spot price of silver traded at $5.41. Recently, the spot price of silver has traded as high as $20 an ounce, a 386 percent return on investment!
Traditionally, more silver is mined each year than gold. Therefore, silver is much cheaper and more affordable for individual collectors to purchase than gold.
The American Eagle Silver coin is the only American silver coin that can be invested in an IRA. Thus, buying Silver Eagles are an easy way for a small investor to participate in the silver bull market.

But, is this increased demand the only reason for the rationing of these Silver Eagle Coins?

Rumor has it that the U.S. Mint has run out of the planchets used to create the coins. A planchet, or blank as they are sometimes referred to, is a round metal disk that is ready to be struck into coins. These planchets are also used to create coins other than the American Silver Eagles, and the companies that produce the planchets are busy, limiting the supply received by the U.S. Mint.

The Silver Institute, a nonprofit international industry association headquartered in Washington, D.C., has written a letter to the Director of the U.S. Mint, urging it to take immediate steps to increase production of the popular Silver Eagles. With silver bullion on the rise, the Silver Institute has asked the U.S. Mint to consider alternative methods for streamlining the production process of the American Eagle Silver Dollar coin.

Bullion coins by definition are the coins minted for investments and not for circulation. They are valued for their precious metal content rather than for their numismatic value.

The value of gold bullion coins in its essence is the gold value of a coin plus the premium. The gold value varies with the time of course but it is what it is on the gold market, which is around $30 per gram at the present. The premium on the other hand is a very subtle subject and can be affected by many factors. And we're going to have a look at some of them.

One of the most usual factors is the coin grade. This one can be split into the coin finish and the coin grade itself. The finish for gold bullion coins can be either brilliant uncirculated or proof. Proof coins usually have higher premium than their brilliant uncirculated counterparts. The grade of a coin is basically its condition. And of course, better condition means higher premium. The grade can vary from PO-1 (pure) to MS-70 (perfect) for normal coins and from PF-01 to PF-70 for proof coins.

Another factor that can affect the value of gold bullion coins is the coin mintage, or the number of coins issued in any particular year or in total. This one is not as crucial for bullion coins as for normal ones because usually bullion coins are minted in great number, but for some coins and for some years it can be significant. It is not an issue of course for the coins that either don't have a year (which is quite rare) or have some set year in the past (like Mexican Pesos or Austrian Ducats).

And the last factor that can affect the value of gold bullion coins is actually the size of a coin. It may sound odd, but smaller coins usually have higher premium.

The first modern gold bullion coin was the South African Krugerrand minted in 1967 and weighed exactly 1 troy ounce (31.10 g). The value of the coin was basically its gold value plus very small premium (3-5%). As the coin proved to be very popular, other countries started minting their bullion coins and at the later years started producing coins as fractions of the troy ounce - half ounce, quarter, tenth, and finally twentieth, which is just about 1.5 g. The premium of the latter one can be up to 50% of the gold value. So, if you're planning on investing into gold bullion coins, consider buying bigger ones.

The difference here is that the 1931-S is likely to sell much faster than the 1940 Cent, plus the dollar value involved in measurable.

As an example, the 1890 quarter eagle pictured above is an issue with a mintage of only 8,720 and it is often found with reflective surfaces.
